Chiaroscuro = light and shade
Chiaroscuro woodcut emerged in 16th century Europe, introducing a brand new technology: the use of multiple woodblocks to create color prints. These images were generally monochromatic and employed three or more layers from light to dark, each on separate blocks, to build the image.
This workshop will approach chiaroscuro in a different way. Using one block and color reduction, we will explore tonal modulation and three dimensional volume through careful attention to carving and inking in multiple transparent layers. This will give us a chance to focus on a key element in color reduction: mastering value relationships.
WHEN: 10am-4pm, Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7
WHERE: Two Rivers Printmaking Studio
TUITION: $400
