White Line Woodcuts with Marilyn Syme

  • Google Calendar ICS

Also known as Provincetown Prints, white line woodcuts are a distinctive technique of multicolored prints cut from a single block of wood. Small grooves between the elements of a design create the white lines in the image. This process uses watercolor paints and can be done without a press. Marilyn Syme, the instructor, has decades of experience as a painter and printmaker and is passionate about this art form.

Jigsaw Relief Printing with Eva Sturm-Gross

  • Google Calendar ICS

In this beginner friendly two day course students will get to try their hands at jigsaw printing! Traditionally adding color to a print can get complicated and can often involve multiple blocks, tricky registration, and a lot of precision. With jigsaw printing students can cut up their blocks, ink them separately, and assemble them at the press. Lots of color all at once! We will learn to use (and sharpen!) the carving gouges, cut out blocks using a scroll saw, and experiment with textures and colors. Students will get to design and execute their own prints and will leave with the confidence to make jigsaw prints on their own.

PRONTOPLATE WITH LIZ BANNISH

PRONTOPLATE WITH LIZ BANNISH

Lithography was accidentally invented by German playwright Alois Senefedler in 1798 as he was searching for a way to reproduce copies of his scripts. This Prontoplates class will explore polyester plate litho, which can be considered lithography’s modern cousin. This workshop will cover the soup-to-nuts of plate creation and processing, inking and printing, and more. Participants will utilize inexpensive materials such as ballpoint pens, sharpie markers, or laser jet printing to create their plates. The plates can be cut into shapes, support photo-based imagery and can be altered between printings. Discover ink fundamentals, registration tips, and how to print lithographic plates using an etching press. Artists will create unique or editionable prints that can easily incorporate hand drawn or photographic elements, or both. Learn the quick way to litho!

In this class we will approach monotype through the lens of painting. We will be using brushes and ink on plexiglass plates and will be painting from observation. We will use the brush and other tools to make direct strokes of color, but also to work subtractively so that the white of the paper can provide highlights.

ETCHING WITH BIG GROUND AND ACRYLIC SPRAY AQUATINT WITH BRIONY MORROW-CRIBBS

  • Google Calendar ICS

This two-day workshop explores two essential intaglio techniques — hardground line etching and aquatint — using safer, greener materials. We'll begin by preparing copper plates and coating them with Baldwin's BIG ground, a non-toxic alternative to traditional hardgrounds that produces the same wonderfully crisp etched line. Students will draw into the ground, etch their plates, and pull a first proof on the press.

On day two, we'll return to our plates and apply an acrylic aquatint spray to build tone, texture, and depth. We'll be using acrylic spray in place of traditional rosin aquatint — a safer, healthier approach that also opens up exciting possibilities for creating gradients. Through step etching, students will learn to develop a rich range of values on a single plate, from delicate grays to velvety darks.

By the end of the weekend, participants will leave with at least one proof of their plate and a solid foundation in these versatile processes. This workshop is suitable for beginners, though a foundation in etching will be helpful.
