Mokulito,“wood lithography”, is a relatively newly developed process (first done in the 1970s). Like traditional lithography, the process relies on the principle that oil and water do not mix. Oily substances are used to draw and/or paint an image on the block, the block is soaked with water, and oily printing ink is rolled over it. The printing ink sticks to the oily surfaces only, and then the block is run through the press or hand-printed.
Mokulito is much more accessible than traditional limestone lithography and this type of printmaking is unique and exciting because marks and images may be created on one block of plywood through drawing, painting AND carving, and then all are printed simultaneously. Some printmaking experience is helpful but not required.
